World Nomads review: who it’s really for.
World Nomads is travel insurance for active trips, sold in many countries. The plan, the insurer and the limits depend on where you live. We checked the US plans and the Australian policy.
Ankyro may earn a commission if you buy from World Nomads. It never changes the verdict.
World Nomads is a good fit for healthy travellers who do sports and adventure activities on a trip with a clear end date. It is not built for living abroad: its Australian policy says it can’t be used in place of health insurance. Skip it if you have a health condition, or if you want cover for life in a new country.
- Good for
Healthy travellers on a trip with an end date who plan to hike, dive, ski or do other sports.
- Not for
Expats and long-term nomads who need health insurance, and people with a health condition.
The facts
World Nomads, from its own fine print.
Checked against World Nomads’s own documents on 23 October 2026. Prices and terms change, so check the latest wording before you buy.
- Price: quote only
World Nomads does not publish prices. You get one through a quote, and it depends on where you live, your trip and the activities you add.

The Australian policy covers people who are 69 or younger when they buy or extend. It also excludes people who have lived overseas for more than 2 years. The US pages don’t state an age limit.

Source: worldnomads.com - Pre-existing conditions: mostly not covered
World Nomads says it does not cover conditions you had before you bought. US Explorer and Epic plans offer a waiver if you buy early. Some countries automatically cover over 40 listed conditions.
Source: worldnomads.com - Claims: online, within 20 days in the US
US members claim through the Trip Mate portal and should report within 20 days. US cover is secondary, so you claim from your own health plan first.

Good and bad
What we like, and what we don’t.
- The good
- Covers a long list of sports and adventure activities, which many plans leave out.
- You can buy or extend while you’re already abroad.
- In Australia, the Explorer plan has no limit on overseas medical costs.
- Each country has its own local insurer and policy wording.
- The bad
- No public prices. You need a quote to compare.
- US medical limits of USD 125,000 to 250,000 are modest for a serious case.
- It is for trips, not for living abroad. Long-term expats are not the target.
- Most pre-existing conditions are excluded unless you buy early or meet strict rules.
